I have been busy updating the calendar this week!  Click Here for the full list of upcoming events!

If you are running out of air-conditioned options, check out my Summer Picks list below, there are so many options that are free or minimal in cost.

Another life saving option are local Museums. Museums are a fabulous options this time of the year. (THEY HAVE AC!) In the menu options under Events & Reviews, click on the Museums options for great write ups on some of my favorite places to weather the summer heat and storms.  Most of them are right here in South Florida, but a few are scattered around the country too!  For example, the Schoolhouse Museum in Boyton Beach.  This was a summer time must for my daughter right up through 1st grade. To learn more about this little gem of a museum see my write up on The Schoolhouse Museum in Boynton Beach.

The Week Ahead: More Summer Deals and Free Programs

Pondhawk Nature Area

This week we have even more summer fun for you to check out!  Keeping Up With Kids is your best resource for summer fun!  I have listed below some more making  the list of our favorite summer deals and places even longer!  This is the way to do summer on a budget!

I realized I left off Libraries on last weeks list!

Boca Library Kids Programs
Boca Library Kids Programs

In case you are looking for cheap, cool, fun, and educational opportunities for the kids this summer, don’t forget about your local library! Most libraries throughout Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade Counties have story times for young kids and even activities for tweens, teens and adults. Many of the Libraries offer shows by professional performers, these can include puppet show, magic shows, and storytellers among others.  Look up your local branch now and fill your calendar!  Even the smaller branches have shows and programs, so don’t miss out!

Think about it when you travel this summer too, we have been to free programs when we visit family out of town and never been disappointed.

Alvin Sherman Library at Nova Southeastern University in Davie is one of my favorites.  Their PK and toddler programs are developed with pre-reading in mind.  They often have information available for parents to help you develop reading skills in your kids.  They also have a great kids section in the library with comfortable places to sit and do puzzles, color and draw, or read with your kids.  Computers are available with great software games as well.

Oakland Park Library is a great place to spend some time.  It is a small library, but they have professional puppeteers come in over the summer to do shows for the kids as well as other presentations.

Imperial Point Library does story time for the little ones weekly and reading programs for school age kids.  I love this library, they are always so friendly and it just has a great vibe.

Wilton Manors Library is a great one too.  They have special presentations for kids as well as summer reading programs.

Palm Beach County Libraries have massive and multiple programs going on around the county!

Splash Pad Playground at Patch Reef Park in Boca Raton

Water Fun!  One of our favorites is Coconut Cove Water Park in Boca.  Most all the water parks in Broward and Palm Beach County open every day for the summer starting June 5th or 6th.

Castaway Island at TY toddler interactive pool
Castaway Island at TY Park is another favorite.  It is a bit cheaper and has a great fenced in kiddie splash pool, big kid slides, a rock waterfall and more!

Splash Pad A1A & Atlantic in Pompano Beach
Splash Pad A1a & Atlantic in Pompano Beach

Pompano Beach Splash Pad is another great day out!  Between the playground on the beach, the ocean and the splash pad, how can you go wrong?

You can find many more of our favorite Splash Pads and Water Parks under the menu tab Events and Review, scroll down to Water Play.

Schoolhouse Museum Train

Indoor Museums are the best bet for those days that you just can’t face the heat or the summer storms are making outdoor play tough.  Boca Children’s Museum is a great one for the little ones (Preschool) or Schoolhouse Museum in Boynton Beach is perfect for younger school age kids!  You can find more of our favorite museums under the menu tab Events and Review, scroll down to Museums.

Movies!  Imagine you get up on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning and just don’t know what to do!  Here is your answer!

The Deals!
Need a good reason to visit a local (or not so local) museum this summer?  Here are several!

BOA Museums on US

Bank of America is offering it’s customers free admission to local museums all over the country.  It is usually the first full weekend of the month and you just have to present your bank card at the door.  We have been to Museum of Discovery and Science with the program.  Basically it means the adults are free (as long as you have a bank card for each person) and you just have to pay for the kids if they are over 2.

Click Here for the link to see other participating Museums in your area.

2014 Summer Savings Pass

The Summer Saving Pass!  We pick this Summer Saving Pass up every year. It is a great deal, you get unlimited admission to four different attractions.  The Museum of Discovery and Science, Lion Country Safari, Miami Seaquarium, and Miami Metro Zoo.

Happy Earth Day!

I had to share this amazing photo taken by my childhood friend Tari Stage-Harvey near her home in Alaska. What a fantastic Earth Day photo! She has a blog called A Waste of Time where she has been sharing her insights on her life as a pastor, mom and a wife.  Her writing is exactly like her, witty, clever, entertaining, sarcastic, honest and borderline obnoxious.

I also thought I would share the Science Live Earth Day Facts & History with you this week! There are several events going on around town so no one should be bored this weekend!

We have had a hectic crazy week, so I apologize for the Week Ahead coming out a day late, but as I always say better late than never!

The Week Ahead for South Florida; Sandoway House & Museums

Sandoway House

It has been a tough week getting back into the swing of things with school.  I am beginning to think that Spring Break might just be cruel.  It was so easy to fall into the lazy days of summer, and oh boy getting up at 5 this week was brutal!  I was back to substituting at my daughters school and I could tell my sweet little kindergartners felt the same way!

This week I suggest heading out to a museum you find some of our favorites on under Museums under the Review Tab, to see some of our favorite places to play and learn.  I wanted to mention also that Sandoway House in Delray Beach reopened a few weeks ago after being closed due to a car hitting the building, it is a sweet little place to visit, if you want a quick educational visit!  Click Here for Photo’s and a Review of Sandoway House.

Also, I would like to remind everyone to take a moment to read 5 Tips for Beach Safety.  It is still Spring Break for other states and so we will continue to entertain visiting families at the beach more and more as summer looms ahead of us.  Please be sure to impress upon anyone you care about the dangers of rip currents. There have been numerous rescues over the last few weeks on our beaches and even at least one death.  The beaches are a wonderful gift to spend time at, however rip currents are very real and very serious.

5 Tips for Camping with Kids

Photo Credit: Lion Country Safari KOA

Tip #1:  Do a practice run.  The idea of sleeping in a tent can be so
exciting for kids that the over stimulation may keep everyone from having a good
night.  Families can build up a familiarity with camping by putting the tent up in their own back yard.  Start out slow allowing the kids to play in the tent during the day.   The next day
have dinner out in the backyard to prepare the kids for what it will be like to
have a campground dinner.  Last but not least, spend the night in the tent.  Do
this as many times as needed until everyone is comfortable with and can go to
sleep easily.

Tip #2:  Keep it close to home.  It is easy to forget that there are great campsites within an hour’s drive from Fort Lauderdale.  A first camping trip doesn’t have to be far away.
CB
Smith Park, Markham Park, John Prince Park, and Miami Everglades Campgrounds all offer local opportunities for family camping. Camprate.com can help find a campground and give reviews of the grounds as well.
Tip #3:  Keep it short.  Don’t think a first camping trip should be a week long adventure.Smores Fort Wilderness Campgrounds at Disney World
Start out small and work up to longer trips.  Pick a campground with lots to do and just stay one night.  When the entire family learns how to work together and sleep well then make plans for that nice long camping vacation.  State parks also offer facilities like water and restrooms.  There is no reason to go completely rustic on the first trip out.
Tip #4: Be prepared with ActivitiesCB Smith Park in Pembroke Pines has lots to offer to entertain and wear out the kids. There is biking, hiking, boating, and in the summer there is even a water park.  Check out the local area surrounding your campground as well. Flamingo Gardens is a short 15 minute drive from CB Smith Park.  These built in activities can help reduce planning time.
Our Camp Site Fort Wilderness Campgrounds at Disney WorldAnother option is the Kampgrounds of America (KOA). We use the Kabins when we take road trips, check our KOA adventures in Asheville, NC and Savannah, GA.  A local South Florida option is Lion Country Safari in West Palm Beach.  This campsite and zoo is an easy 40 minute drive from Fort Lauderdale and provides facilities that will keep the family happily entertained at all times. Lion Country Safari often offers specials for two free passes to the park with a night of camping, and it even has a pool.  Jennifer Berthume, PR/Marketing Director of Lion Country Safari says The thing I think is the
coolest about our campground is that you can sleep right next door to hundreds of animals from over 6 continents. You can hear lions and siamangs while camping!”
No one will be bored at campgrounds like these, and parents won’t
have to exhaust themselves planning activities in advance.
Disney’s Fort Wilderness Campground has  just about everything you could ever need while camping.  There is little need to even go into the parks at this campground there are so many built in activities!
Take along a few activities like crafts.  Kids love animals so camping is a great chance to introduce nature activities like birding.  Here is how you can get started with 5 Tips for Birding with Kids.
Tip #5: Check the weather. Florida weather can be extreme, so make sure that it is not going to be too hot, too cold or too wet.  There is nothing worse than a wet night in a tent. Especially if you are new to camping. Florida’s winter and fall generally have the mildest weather and are a great time of the year to camp.  With a little background practice families can be prepared for exciting camping adventures that will provide children with memories for a lifetime.

The Week Ahead for South Florida Diapers, Seuss & Fevers

Happy Birthday Dr SeussThe Kiddo got suddenly better just in time for Saturday!  Not sure how she pulled it off, but the fever broke and off we went! We had a great day at the Garden last weekend where we celebrated the birthday of Dr. Seuss.   We are growing some great (well 2) strawberries and cabbages at our garden. I am waiting to find out how many diapers the Junior League collected for their Diaper Bank, but my daughter asked if she could build a fort with them, so there was an impressive amount.
