Flamingo Gardens

We love Flamingo Gardens!  This tropical paradise in Davie offers visitors the chance to wander through 60 acres of of amazing botanical gardens, orchards and an animal sanctuary.

Flamingo Gardens is home to over 90 species of mostly rescued Florida native bird and animals.  It is a wonderful place to learn about the diverse populations, both plant and animal, that are found here in Florida and no where else in the world.

Spoonbill at Flamingo Gardens

My daughter loves the half-acre free flight aviary that has over 250 wading birds in it.  We went so often when she was still in a stroller that she can name many of them!  Nothing is funnier than a two year old trying to say spoonbill!

I have two favorite events at Flamingo Gardens that I have written about a lot over the years.  The first is the Christmas Lights event they do every year!  The second is the Halloween Scarecrow Contest.

Flamingo Gardens offers many great events throughout the year, but some of my absolute favorites are coming up soon!

The Week Ahead Events List for South Florida 12/11/13

6th Street in Pompano Beach

I am starting to feel theGarden of Lights Credit: Flamingo Gardens crunch of Christmas now! No, I have not even started shopping! I did get our Christmas Tree up last weekend, but I have not started baking yet and it never feels like the Holidays until my house smells like Pizzelles!

Here are some of my favorite things for the Holidays!  Of course our Holiday is not complete until we visit Flamingo Gardens while it is all lit up!  Santa’s Little Helper  is a great day!  So much fun!

Next up are my favorite Holiday Web sites!  Who does not need a free personalized video message from Santa for the kids?  Not to mention Norad Tracks Santa on Christmas Eve!

Child meeting Mrs. Claus at Santa Land at Bass Pro ShopsBass Pro Shops is the only place to get a free picture with Santa!  You can do a craft, play on some of the arcades and maybe even visit with Mrs. Claus, she is usually wandering around somewhere!

Here is the best place to go and see Christmas lights in Pompano Beach, are you ready?  Behind the Cemetery on 6th Street (if you drive over you can’t miss them!) the whole street usually lights up and celebrates! I have not been over there yet this year, but we can’t wait to go back!

Oh and if you missed the Pompano Boat Parade you can watch our quick video of highlights!

The Week Ahead Events List for South Florida 9/26/13

Flamingo Gardens Bear

Flamingo Gardens BearI hope everyone is having a fabulous week!  I am waiting impatiently for the cooler weather!

My Pick of the week is Flamingo Gardens and the new Bear Habitat.  Last weekend we went to Flamingo Gardens to see their new Bear Habitat and Josh the Bear! It is one of the biggest and beautiful habitats I have ever seen.  Josh the bear seemed so happy there.  One of the volunteers told me that he had never touched grass before, so it is an amazing thing the Gardens and Wildlife Rescue was able to do for him.

We had such a great time, I really love that place, it feels like I have walked back in time to to a simpler place that may, or may not be be inhabited by dinosaurs!  If you like to to take photo’s this is the place for you.

Here is your list for week, don’t forget to check out the list and sort for Holiday in the  category drop down and get your Halloween fun sorted out!

Tips for a Safe and Wonderful Labor Day Holiday

Beach with child by KUWK

Good morning everyone!  I wanted throw out a quick post since today is Labor Day and I know there will be loads of fun BBQ’s and of course, South Florida’s standard Labor Day party takes place at theChild digging in sand in a Purple Hat at Beach beach!

If your BBQ! runs late please be careful of mosquito’s.  Dengue Fever has been in the news a bit in South Florida as it has for the last few years.  So please protect yourself and your family!

If you are headed to the beach today, please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the signs of rip currents and how to deal with them.  Every holiday there seems to be reports of deaths due to rip currents.  There are a few things you can do to protect yourself and your kids not just from rip currents, but other beach hazards.  Please check out my article on 5 Tips for Hitting the Beach with Kids.

Have a Great, Fun and Safe Day Everyone!

A note from our Flamingo Gardens Labor Day Bird Festival Logosponsor:

Flamingo Gardens has a great Labor Day Bird Festival going on today, Best of all, Labor Day is a Half Price Admission Day!

Santa Weekends at Flamingo Gardens and Holiday Lights Review

We love this event.  The Gardens have all of their lights up and it is fun to wander around looking for cute little light displays hidden in the trees.  It is usually a quiet day and Santa hangs out at the Wray House with some of the resident Bird of Prey and their volunteer handlers.

I have to admit it was tranquil and lovely the temperature was cooler and it made such a nice change to walk around in jeans and long sleeve shirts!  This is a low key event and if you are looking for a mellow, beautiful place to spend a few hours in the late afternoon with your family, this is it!

Best local playground: Flamingo Gardens

Flamingo Gardens in Davie brings together a lush tropical
garden with a historic plantation and a wildlife sanctuary.  It is an easy drive of about 25 minutes from
Fort Lauderdale, and is well worth the trip.
The courtyard area is chock full of shopping things to do.  What is even better is that this area is
outside the actual park so it is free and could easily be a great morning trip
for families.
As guests enter the courtyard the eyes are drawn immediately
to the large aviary exhibits in the center.  Children and their parents will love to watch the Military Macaws, Cockatoos, and Blue and Gold Macaws play, some of them even talk a little.
The courtyard area has a great playground with mulch flooring a large climbing structure with a bridge and lots of slides.  This quiet playground is rarely busy allowing the kids to play while parents watch on from nearby benches.  The playground is fairly well shaded and located conveniently next to the restrooms.
When the children are good and tired from playing on the
playground head on over to the Tropical Marketplace snack bar for a cold drink,
a fruit smoothie or a hotdog.  There is lots of outdoor shaded seating next to the snack bar where guests can enjoy a fresh cold cup of  juice while listening to the
parrots.  Watch out though you may have to walk around one of the beautiful wild peacocks who like to hang out in the area.  Guests can also shop for gourmet
gifts and have fruit shipped to friends and family. The next shopping opportunity is the Garden Shop and Secret Garden, where guests can shop for fantastic garden items and browse through tropical plants that will perk up any South Florida back yard.
Flamingo Gardens is a great local destination inside and out
and is a must see Special Events and Exhibits for any family with kids.
