Seriously Ugly Home Grown Carrots

Garden Plot

We have had a busy week, and it will only get busier over the next few weekends as we try to hit every possible Halloween and Pumpkin Patch/Fall Festival that we can find!

You should have seen the sheer amazement on her face when she pulled this out of the ground!

It is time for families in the south to put in a garden!  While our friends up north are hunkering down for winter, we are now looking forward to the season when our plants won’t drown or burn!  Have you ever wanted to plant a garden, but found the volume of information overwhelming?  No worries, I have you covered.

Follow my 5 Tips for Planting a Garden with Kids and see what happens!  The key is to treat it like an experiment and don’t over think it.  You can still plant things even if you live in a condo!  So come on, get dirty with us! No excuses here my friends!

Bedner’s Farm Fresh Market, Strawberry U-Pick and Pumpkin Patch

Bedner’s Farm Fresh Market Fall Festival

Update:

We go to Bedner’s every year!  They stepped it up a notch last year, which means that it cost a bit more too, so expect to drop some cash.  They added some great games (free) for the kids and bunch of bounce houses (not free).  The best advice i can give you about this place is that you need to go the first weekend if expect to get good pumpkin patch photo’s.  The first weekend the vines on the hay bales are green and look great.  By the end of the season, you will have photo’s of pumpkins on brown hay bales.  The second bit of advice is to go early.  This place gets very busy!

Bedner’s Fall Festival Review

This is the best Pumpkin Patch that I have been able to find.  It is a bit of a drive from Fort Lauderdale, but seriously worth it!  Bedner’s have a great market filled with beautiful locally grown fruit and vegetables, some of which are grown on property.

Weekends in October are the best here due to the Fall Festival!  Guests take a ride through the fields on a tractor to the “pumpkin patch”.  We got to see an alligator on the way!

Pumpkins don’t grow terribly well in Florida, so it’s not a real pumpkin patch, There is an entire field filled with Pumpkins sitting on what looked like cucumber vines.  So you get the feel that you are really out picking pumpkins. It is a great photo opportunity!  I got several pie pumpkins while we were there and made some great pumpkin pie with it!

The grounds are all decorated for fall and Halloween, there is a huge Tiki Hut where you can sit in the shade and enjoy great barbecue and home made ice cream and the best fresh dipped caramel apples ever!

There are also some local craft venders with some really cute stuff for sale.  Be prepared to walk to get there, we had to park down the street, so bring a stroller to carry your pumpkin back to your car even if your kid won’t use the stroller.  If you get there at opening you can park right in the lot (I won’t go unless we get there early, it gives us a chance to get through all the activities with less lines.)

During the summer they also run a strawberry  and tomato u-pick.

Bedner’s can be found at 10066 Lee Road Boynton Beach, Florida 33473 and the Fall Festival is open Beginning September 27th Saturday 9-6 and Sunday 10-5.

Alligator at Bedner's FarmLast word of caution:  There are alligators in the canals, and while we were at the pumpkin patch I did see a child fall into the canal.  He was fine, his mother was in like a flash right after him.  However, it is a good reminder of how fast a kid can trip and fall.  Please be right on top of your kids at all times near these canals.

Boo at the Zoo Palm Beach Zoo

Boo at the Zoo Palm Beach Zoo
We had a crazy weekend last weekend.  On Friday we headed out to Boo at the Zoo at the Palm Beach Zoo, which is always a great time.  The Zoo decorations were really good this year, with “spider web” stretched out along most of the fences.

We also went to the Boca Raton Community Gardens Trick or Treat so others can eat.  ItBoca Raton Community Garden was so amazing!  The event was a huge success, with all kinds of old fashioned games and activities for the kids.  Of course there was a bounce house and most importantly, the club raised over 2000 pounds of food for the food pantry.

If you tried to do any outdoor activities last weekend you probably noticed the brutal heat and humidity.  As I write this the weather man is on the TV announcing a cool front so this weekend should be a little more comfortable for doing some outside activities. The list is hugely long and I am sad to see the end of the Halloween/ Fall Festivals for the year. I am going to try to get to as many as possible!

As for my pick of the week, well I can’t even choose which ones to go to myself!  EverStella & Dot Shop for a Causey time I decide on one, I change my mind.  My best advice is to get to as many as you can!

Also our sponsor Stella & Dot is doing a special show for October.  Shop for a Cause.  100% percent of the proceeds from the Breast Cancer Awareness Boutique will be donated to Noren Fraser Foundation Supporting Women’s Cancer Research.  10% of the proceeds of all other purchases will also be donated to Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS)  in the fight against blood cancers.

One last thing,  I wanted to share the Checklist put out by the Boca Raton Police Department for Halloween Safety.  It is a good reminder for all of us no matter where we live, so take a moment and read it.

The Great Scarecrow Exhibit at Flamingo Gardens

–>
Okay, so we headed out to the Flamingo Gardens for The Great Scarecrow Exhibit on Saturday.  It was so nice to walk around the Gardens in the finally cooler South Florida weather!  What a fun idea!  Flamingo Gardens’ patrons build their own scarecrows and enter them into the contest.  All the scarecrows are  kept on exhibit for the whole month of October.  There were scary ones, traditional ones and even one that used recycled materials in a sort of modern art kind of way.  My 2 year old made it her mission to get her picture taken with each of the Scarecrows that will be on exhibit till the end of the month.
A few updates on the Gardens, the Garden Shop in the front courtyard is closed as is the Fruit Shipping Store and the Snack Bar.  The Snack Bar inside the Gardens next to the Flamingo Exhibit is still open as is the large Gift Shop.
I would love to go to the evening Halloween program, Beware the Lair of the Swamp Witch however the flyers say that it is recommended for 12 years and older, so that leaves us out.  Let me know if you go and post a comment here about it for us.
The gardens will be doing a trick or treat event, Story Time with the Good Witch  for everyone Halloween weekend, which looks like fun.  I will try to get there, but it is a very busy weekend for us.
